Says ‘wet spell will likely disrupt surface transport’

Srinagar, January 01 (KNO) : The local Meteorological department here on Tuesday predicted an end to the persisting dry spell in Jammu and Kashmir, saying that the State would receive fresh snow and rainfall by today evening till January 06. According to KNO correspondent, the MeT Advisory reads that the two Western Disturbances would likely affect Jammu and Kashmir in two phases by today evening. “The first Western Disturbance would affect JK from Jan 01- Jan 02 while as the second Western Disturbance would affect JK from Jan 04- Jan 06,” the advisory reads. It added that during this period, a major wet spell will begin in Jammu and Kashmir, which would also lead to disruption in surface transport on major highways. The advisory said that rains and snow is expected at widespread places of Jammu and Kashmir including Ladakh. “A fresh western disturbance will most likely affect the state of Jammu and Kashmir from evening of January 1 to 2,” the advisory said. “Under the influence of this system, there is possibility of light rain or snow in plains and moderate rain or snow in upper reaches at widespread places across the State,” the advisory said. It added that another western disturbance (WD) will most likely affect the state from evening of January 04 to 06. “Under its influence, there is possibility of moderate rain or snowfall at widespread places of Jammu and Kashmir including Ladakh,” the MeT advisory informed. There is possibility of heavy snowfall at isolated places with maximum intensity and spread on 4 and 5 January and gradual decrease thereafter, it added, saying that “this will be the first major wet spell in the starting of New Year for J&K.” While issuing a warning-cum-advisory for transport system, it added that the wet spell in Jammu and Kashmir may lead to disruption of surface and air transportation like national highway (Srinagar-Jammu, Mughal Road), etc. It added that higher reaches of Kashmir, Ladakh and hilly area of Jammu would receive moderate snowfall during 4 and 5 January with possibility of heavy snowfall in isolated places. The MeT director added that there will be significant fall in day temperature while as the night temperature would rise slightly. Meanwhile, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Baseer Ahmad Khan later issued weather advisory. The advisory issued by Div Com reads that Deputy Commissioners of Kashmir division including Leh and Kargil have been asked to advise people not to venture in avalanche prone areas during this period. “The concerned Deputy Commissioners are directed to activate their control rooms and ensure that the snow clearance equipment is placed at proper places for snow clearance in respect of their districts as per the snow clearance plan,” the advisory added.
